Blogging:  How to Launch + Monetize A Professional Blog

Is Blogging Dead?

Some say blogging is dead.  Truthfully, I once worried it would die too.  But is blogging dead?  Absolutely NOT!

Blogging is just… different.

Blogging is a business run by people for people.  The best blog posts provide solutions to people’s problems.  As long as we have people and we have problems- then problem-solving blogging is a service that is still needed and still alive.

How to Launch a Professional Blog

It’s easy and affordable to launch a professional blog.  In just 3 quick steps you can launch.

First let’s look at the three quick steps to launch your professional blog. Then, we’ll talk about your business plan and your blog purpose, and finally we will talk about how to monetize your site.

3 Quick Steps to Launch Your Blog

Here are 3 Quick Steps to Launch your Professional Blog.

1. Secure Hosting

Once you have a business plan for your blog, you’ll need to decide on hosting.  I recommend affiliate, SiteGround.  You can read more on why I love this host so much and decide for yourself.

2. Install WordPress

Once you have hosting, then Install WordPress with the one-click install.  It’s free to install the WordPress and will get you up and running on the best platform fast.

3. Choose a Theme

Next, choose a theme.  Free themes are fine to start with.

Draft Your Blog’s Purpose

If you want to start a blog to help people, share experiences, open doors, and make a passive income then you absolutely should.   Blogging can be a great way to help others.  You don’t have to have it all figured out to start, but you will want to make a few decisions before you go live, including:

  1. How do you want to help others?  (ex: On my blog I want to share ideas, inspiration, and networks)
  2. What niche does the majority of your content fall into? (ex: Media/CrossFit)
  3. Who will be your target market?  (ex: business owners, fit people)
  4. How often will you post? (2 or 3 times per week, 1 a month, etc.)
  5. Can you afford to launch? (It’s only $3.75/mo at affiliate > SiteGround to launch right now)!

Write down your answers on a spare piece of paper.

Write a Business Plan

Pro Blogging is a business, which means you should write a business plan for your blog just like you would any other business.  The plan will serve as an in-depth way to explore your ideas about your professional blog.

I spent a Saturday in December 2016 writing the business plan for my blog during a Writer’s Workshop MeetUp.  By writing a business plan I was able to really get a picture of what I was wanting to create by outlining it ahead of time.  Then, decisions were easier because I knew what was in the plan.   Of course, details of the plan may change- so you may want to revisit the plan yearly.  If you need start-up cash, a business plan will be required.

How to Make Money Blogging

Blogging is Not a Get-Rich-Quick Scheme

If you’re wanting to start a blog to get rich quick- keep moving.  It may not happen quickly- although it could depending on your experience and strategies.

If your only purpose to starting a blog is to make money, you’ll be miserable and in turn, you won’t make any money blogging.  However, if you are starting a blog to help others, provide information, spread hope, meet new people, and continuously learn and grow, it’s very likely that you can monetize your blog (make money blogging- a dream come true for most).

How Do You Make Money Blogging?

“How to you make money blogging?”

I get this question often.  When I first started blogging professionally back in 2010- it was difficult for me to believe that I could make good money online.  None of my friends were working online.  No one I knew was working online, other than my cousin.  The idea that blogging was a job was too abstract at first, but I thought… I love writing and doing things online so I’ll try it.   Turns out it’s my most favorite job ever. It’s too fun.    It was a dream job- and still is!

With help from a great teacher, I quickly learned that blogging is a real business- and the best one in my opinion.  The overhead is low, you choose what to write about, and you take gigs that you’re interested in.  To make money blogging, just takes time, persistence, and strategy.
